A Grand Tour Of A Stately Manor
As you turn off tree-lined Southborough Drive with its multi-million dollar mansions and climb the steep, winding driveway to the clubhouse, you can’t help but be filled with a growing sense of anticipation. High above on the outcropping, like a guardian protecting the mountains to the north, the stately Tudor manor sits proudly.
You round the final curve, and the clubhouse finally reveals itself. Exquisite architecture, impeccable stonework, a steeply-pitched roof with manifold gables, decorative half-timbers and multipaned windows combine to create a magnificent, genteel structure; one that seems to be set in another time, and yet is immediately familiar and welcoming.
Ascending the classic, two-tiered staircase that leads to the tasteful glass-panelled wooden entrance doors, you begin to feel at home. The soft light from within seems to beckon you to 'abide a wee while’.
The Foyer
Through the doors, up a short flight of stairs to a large landing and the foyer. The interior of this grand manor, while certainly impressive, recalls a favorite pair of slippers – cozy and comfortable. Deep, rich maroon carpeting covers aged hardwood floors that occasionally creak under your step. Even the smell seems familiar. There’s a hint of the old country, momentarily transporting you back to the home of your ancestors. Now you begin to understand and appreciate the ambience. For though she is less than seventy years old – a mere child by European standards – Capilano’s clubhouse glows with ageless antiquity.
A classic selection of furnishings is neatly positioned throughout the room, and pale buff walls serve as a backdrop for the substantial collection of paintings by well-known Canadian artists. To your left, a friendly concierge awaits at the reception station, ready to serve should you require assistance.
The Stanley Thompson Room
Just off the foyer, a classic archway frames the entrance to the social heart of the clubhouse – the 'great room’ of Capilano – the Stanley Thompson Room.
A band of large windows surrounds the room, flooding it in natural light and offering splendid views east to the mountain slopes and south to the sparkling city of Vancouver. The grand scale is made intimate through a mix of softly-coloured walls and deep umber panelling enriched with spectacular artwork. Polished French doors invite you to take your drink of choice outside onto the large wrap-around deck lined with trailing hanging baskets to take in the spectacular vistas. The Stanley Thompson Room truly is a great space – a room where club and community events take place, where daughters are married, sons graduate, and parents celebrate their long, happy lives together.
The Capilano Room
Although known as “the place” for fine dining within the club, the Capilano Room has a relaxed ambiance that encourages after dinner lingering at the table with fellow golfers, friends, family or business associates.
Rich, dark wainscoting surrounds and defines this intimate dining area, and its traditional buff walls are accented by beautiful cornice borders. Cheery servers, smartly turned out in their pressed black and white apparel, naturally welcome you by name. The heft of silver cutlery, the delicacy of fine china and the crispness of tailored serviettes gently give notice that this will be no ordinary dining experience.
The menu is sophisticated and everchanging. Should you wish to explore the culinary possibilities of faraway lands, the delightful fare of Indian curries, Asian tempuras and piquant French cheeses will tempt and awaken your senses. Looking for something a little closer to home? The more exotic offerings are carefully counterbalanced with Canadian staples such as grilled wild salmon, barbecued Alberta beef and steamed Atlantic mussels.
No matter what the season, in this elegant room, superb dining and gracious hospitality is guaranteed.
