It's the start of a perfect Capilano Day. Clear, blue and crisp. Pause for a moment and breathe in the fresh mountain air, just before you step up to Capilano's signature first tee.

Hathstauwk is an absolutely stunning starting hole, cascading downhill and giving you the illusion that you might actually reach the city of Vancouver nestled in the woods beyond the end of the fairway.

Choose your favourite driving club and prepare to let out the shaft, as this tournament par 4 and members' par 5 favours the long hitters. Position your drive to the left of the fairway to set up a direct approach to the wellbunkered green.

Your second shot could be on the green – or for some, their second will take advantage of a left-to-right sloping fairway that gives the ball ample roll. Remember, the dramatic elevation change means your fairway club selection should be, in most cases, one-to-two clubs less than what you would normally use.

This scenic first hole offers endless birdie opportunities and is a spectacular beginning to a course full of magical surprises.
